چکیده

Synthetic schlieren is a new technique that allows one easily and inexpensively to visualise density variations, such as those caused by internal waves propagating in a density stratified fluid. In the special case of two-dimensional internal waves (for example, those created by an oscillating cylinder), synthetic schlieren allows one to measure nonintrusively the wave amplitudes everywhere in space and time. The technique works by measuring the apparent displacement of points in a digitised image (such as a grid of horizontal lines), which is observed by a CCD camera through the experimental test section. Synthetic schlieren is sufficiently sensitive that it can measure sub-pixel-scale disturbances. In this work, we report on the first step toward measuring fully three-dimensional disturbances. We perform laboratory experiments in which internal waves are generated in a uniformly salt-stratified fluid by a vertically oscillating sphere. Theory predicts that the resulting wave-field is in the form of two cones emanating above and below the sphere. Using inverse tomographic techniques, we exploit the axisymmetry of the wave-field to relate the apparent displacement of pixels in an image to the wave amplitudes.

Schlieren measurement of axisymmetric internal wave amplitudes

‘Synthetic schlieren’’, which has been used to measure the amplitude of two-dimensional internal wave beams generated from an oscillating cylinder, is adapted to analyze axisymmetric internal waves generated by an oscillating sphere. This nonintrusive technique uses elementary inverse tomographic methods to measure the amplitude of the conical-structured wave beams everywhere in space and time....

Three-dimensional schlieren measurements using inverse tomography

The ‘‘synthetic schlieren’’ method has been used to measure the amplitude of internal waves that are two-dimensional and axisymmetric. Here it is adapted to reconstruct fully three-dimensional perturbations. This non-intrusive technique, which uses inverse tomography methods, shows accurate results when a sufficient number of perspectives taken from the same experiment are provided to the inver...

Studies on the Transition of the Flow Oscillations over an Axisymmetric Open Cavity Model

Computations and experimental validation were conducted to obtain flow field over an axisymmetric cavity with different front wall inclinations at a freestream Mach number of 2.0. Flow oscillation in and around the cavities may incur a damaging effect on the stable flight of the aircraft and store releases. Aero-acoustic from the oscillating flow induces vibration in the local bay structure and...

Internal Waves in Laboratory Experiments

Recent laboratory methods developed to generate and to analyze internal waves have revealed important insights that sometimes guide and sometimes challenge theoretical predictions and the results of numerical simulations. Here we focus upon observations of internal waves generated by oscillatory or uniform flow over a solid boundary in a continuously stratified fluid. In the laboratory such flo...
